Few garage door problems are as unsettling as a door that opens on its own, or one that will not stay closed. Beyond the annoyance, it is a genuine security and safety concern, since an open garage invites in weather, pests, and anyone walking by. The good news is that this behavior almost always traces back to one of a handful of causes. Here is how to track down yours.
A Stuck Button or Remote
The most common culprit is a physical one. A wall button that is jammed, or a remote with a stuck button, or one buried under something in a drawer or car console, can send a constant signal that trips the door. The same goes for a remote left in a pocket or bag that gets pressed by accident. Check that your wall control is not sticking and that your remotes are not being pressed, and if a keypad button feels mushy or stuck, that can do it too.
Signal Interference or a Neighbor's Remote
Older openers that use a fixed code, rather than a modern rolling code, can be opened by another remote on the same frequency, including a neighbor's. Nearby electronics and even some LED bulbs can also throw off interference that confuses an older receiver. Misadjusted Close Limits or Force Settings
If the door closes most of the way and then reverses back open, the opener may think it has hit an obstruction. Openers have travel and force settings that tell the door where to stop and how hard to push, and if those drift, the door reverses instead of sealing. This looks like the door refusing to stay closed. The settings are adjustable on the motor unit, but getting the force right matters for safety, so it is worth having a technician set it correctly.
Dirty or Misaligned Safety Sensors
The two sensors near the floor stop the door from closing on something in the way. When they are dirty, misaligned, or catching direct sunlight, they can falsely signal an obstruction and send the door back up, so it never stays closed. A Failing Circuit Board or Receiver
If none of the above is the cause, the opener's logic board or receiver may be failing. Age, power surges from our Atlanta summer storms, and moisture can all degrade the electronics, leading to phantom operation where the door opens with no input at all. This is not a DIY fix, and a board that is randomly triggering the door is worth addressing quickly for security.
What to Do Right Now
If your door keeps opening and you cannot stop it, unplug the opener to disable it until you can get it looked at, and use the manual lock or the door's slide lock to keep it secured.
