When your garage door remote suddenly stops working, it is easy to assume something major has failed. Good news: most of the time it is a small, quick fix you can handle yourself. Work through this checklist before you worry, and you will often be back in business in a couple of minutes.
Start With the Obvious: Is the Opener Getting Power?
First, rule out the opener itself. Try the wall button inside the garage. If the wall button works but the remote does not, the problem is the remote. If neither works, the opener may have lost power, so check that it is plugged in and that the breaker has not tripped. A door that will not respond to anything is a different issue than a dead remote.
Replace the Remote Battery
A weak or dead battery is the number one cause of a remote that stops working. Pop the remote open, swap in a fresh coin-cell battery (usually a CR2032 or similar), and make sure it is seated the right way. This alone fixes most remote problems. The same goes for a wireless keypad on the outside of the garage, which also runs on a battery.
Reprogram the Remote or Keypad
Remotes and keypads can lose their sync with the opener after a power surge, a battery change, or seemingly at random. Most openers have a "learn" button on the motor unit: press it, then press the button on your remote within about 30 seconds to re-pair them. Your opener brand's steps vary slightly, but the process is quick. For a keypad, you may also need to re-enter your PIN during setup.
Check Range and Interference
If the remote only works up close, the opener's antenna (the small wire hanging from the motor) may be damaged or tucked up, or something nearby may be causing interference. Make sure the antenna hangs down freely. LED bulbs in or near the opener are a surprisingly common source of radio interference, so if you recently changed a bulb, that could be the culprit.
When to Call a Technician
If you have swapped the battery, reprogrammed, and checked the antenna and the remote still will not work, the issue may be the opener's logic board or receiver, which is a job for a pro. The same is true if the wall button also fails or the opener behaves erratically.
