Sectional (the most common)
This is what most Atlanta homes have. The door is made of horizontal panels connected by hinges, and it rolls up along tracks and sits parallel to the ceiling when open. Sectional doors are versatile, seal well, insulate well, and come in every material and style, which is why they are the default for residential garages. Roll-Up (Coiling)
Roll-up doors coil around a drum above the opening rather than running back along the ceiling. They generally offer less insulation and fewer style options than sectional doors.
Tilt-Up (One-Piece)
Tilt-up doors are a single solid slab that pivots out and up as one piece. They were common on older homes and are rarer now. They need clearance in front to swing out, do not seal or insulate as well as sectional doors, and offer fewer modern features, so many owners replace them with sectional doors when the time comes.
Side-Sliding and Side-Hinged
These open sideways, either sliding along a wall or swinging open like barn or carriage doors. They are a niche choice, useful where there is little headroom for overhead tracks, and popular for a specific carriage-house look. They trade some convenience and sealing for that style and clearance benefit.
Which Type Is Right for You?
For the large majority of homes, a sectional door is the practical choice: best balance of insulation, security, style options, and reliability. Roll-up makes sense for commercial or tight-ceiling situations, and side-hinged suits a specific look or a low-headroom garage.
