If your garage door remote used to work from down the block but now only responds when you are a few feet away, you are dealing with a range problem, not a dead remote. The button still works; something is shrinking how far the signal reaches. Here are the common causes, from the obvious to one that surprises almost everyone.
Start With the Battery
A weakening battery is the most common cause of shrinking range. Long before it dies completely, a low battery puts out a weaker signal, so the remote only works up close. Swapping in a fresh battery is the first and easiest thing to try, and it fixes range problems more often than not.
Check the Opener's Antenna
Look up at the opener motor and you will see a short wire hanging down, that is the antenna that receives your remote's signal. If it has been cut, curled up, tucked into the housing, or damaged, your range drops dramatically. Make sure it hangs straight down and is not wrapped around anything. This one small wire has a big effect.
The Surprising One: LED Bulb Interference
Here is the cause that catches people off guard. Many LED and CFL bulbs, especially cheaper ones, put out radio interference that drowns out your remote's signal. If your range got worse right after you swapped the opener's light bulb for an LED, that is almost certainly the culprit. The fix is to use a bulb rated as garage-door-opener safe or LED-interference-free. Other electronics, WiFi routers, and even nearby transmitters can cause similar interference.
Distance, Line of Sight, and Metal
Remotes have limits, and thick walls, metal (a steel door, a car in the way, a metal building), and simply being too far or at a bad angle all cut range. If the problem is worst from certain spots or directions, obstruction is likely playing a part.
A Worn Remote or Weakening Receiver
Remotes wear out, and the opener's receiver can weaken with age too. If the battery is fresh, the antenna is fine, and interference is ruled out, the remote or the receiver may be the issue.
