Lubricating your garage door is one of the easiest and most rewarding pieces of home maintenance there is. Here is how to do it.
Use the Right Lubricant (Not WD-40)
This is the most important part. Do not use WD-40 as your garage door lubricant. WD-40 is a degreaser and penetrant, not a long-term lubricant, and it actually strips away the grease you want to keep. Instead, use a garage-door-specific silicone or lithium spray. Silicone spray is great because it will not attract dust and grime the way an oil does. You can find it at any hardware store.
Which Parts to Lubricate
- Springs: a light coat on the torsion spring above the door keeps it from rusting and squeaking.
- Hinges and rollers: spray the metal hinges and the roller stems where they meet the brackets. Skip nylon rollers with sealed bearings, which do not need it.
- Bearings and the opener rail: a little on the end bearing plates and along the opener's rail keeps the trolley gliding.
- The lock and armbar: a quick spray keeps moving hardware free.
What NOT to Lubricate
Never grease the tracks themselves. The rollers are supposed to roll along the tracks, not slide through grease, and lubricant there just collects dirt and gunk that makes the door bind. Wipe the tracks clean with a rag instead. Leave the tracks dry and the rollers lubricated, and the door glides.
How to Do It, Step by Step
Close the door, then work through the parts above with the spray, wiping any drips. Open and close the door a couple of times to work the lubricant in, and wipe off the excess. That is it. Do this in spring and fall, and your door will stay noticeably quieter and smoother between visits.
