When you buy a garage door opener, the horsepower matters as much as the brand. Too little power and the opener strains on every cycle and wears out early; the right size lifts your door easily and lasts for years. Here is a simple guide to matching opener power to your door.
It Comes Down to Door Weight
The single biggest factor is how heavy your door is. A light single-car steel door needs far less power than a wide insulated double door or a heavy wood or carriage-style door. Size, material, and insulation all add weight, and weight is what the opener has to lift thousands of times, so heavier doors need more horsepower.
The Common Horsepower Options
- 1/2 HP: the standard choice for a typical single-car steel door or a light double. Fine for most basic doors.
- 3/4 HP: the most versatile pick, and what we recommend for most homes. It comfortably handles heavier double doors, insulated doors, and daily heavy use without straining.
- 1 HP and up: for oversized, solid wood, or carriage-style doors, and heavier custom setups that need extra lifting force.
AC vs DC Motors
Beyond horsepower, openers use either AC or DC motors. DC motors are quieter, often include a soft start and stop that is gentler on the door, and usually allow battery backup. If a quiet, smooth door matters to you, a DC unit is worth it. This is separate from the drive type, which our guide to belt vs chain drive covers.
Do Not Undersize (or Wildly Oversize)
Putting a small opener on a heavy door is the most common mistake, it works at first, then the strain wears out the motor and gears years early. On the other hand, a huge motor on a light door is wasted money. The goal is to match the opener to the actual door. Getting the door balanced and its springs right also lets a properly sized opener do its job easily, which is part of every good install.
Let a Pro Size It
The surest way to get it right is to have a technician look at your door, its size, weight, material, and balance, and recommend the correct opener. If you are also weighing what a new opener costs, our guide to opener replacement cost helps, and our standard door sizes guide covers the door itself.
